Summer Camp Project

Hello class! It was great seeing you all again this Monday and to hear everyone's Summer Camp Project. I think that we will all experience some sort of event or camp planning in our ministry and this assignment just proved how much work goes into an event like this. With that said, what was your easiest and hardest part of planning this summer camp? Also, what parts of the planning did you like the most and which did you like the least? If any of you have any words of wisdom when it comes to planning an event like this, go ahead and share that too!

  1. I thought that the camp project gave good practical application. The easiest part was coming up with the theme and games. The hardest part was doing the budget and sorting things out with the location. I didn't enjoy planning the budget, only because it made me uncomfortable with how much it cost per student even though the cost was cut down significantly. It is hard to look at that price from a church stand point that mostly has poor families. I enjoyed getting to put together the schedule because we had to be intentional about our time and efficient as well. It was good knowledge to obtain before beginning life in ministry!

  2. The easiest part of planning the summer camp was simply dividing out the tasks between each of our group members. Once we did that, we were all able to work on our own parts with ease. The hardest part was communicating between our group members in preparation for the presentation we had to give in class. It was hard to all be on the same page as far as who was supposed to do each task during the presentation. The part that I liked the least about the planning was estimating the budget because it was strenuous to think about all of the money we were dealing with to be "real-life money". The part that I enjoyed the most about planning for this camp was working with my group members and trying to find the most creative and best way to set up a camp for a bunch of youngsters. It was cool to think about our camp actually becoming a real event that we would host for kids and use to try and reach out to them.

  3. I agree that this project proved immensely eye-opening in realizing how much actually must go into pulling an event off: time, energy, and money. It's no piece of cake! The one part that seemed most difficult for me was the budget. Figuring out how much and for what and what to charge and what to pay while making sure you had enough to do it was mind-numbing. On the other, the facility was the easiest part because my group knew of excellent candidates so that we only had to pick one and find out the cost. I enjoyed putting the menu together for sure, but the schedule could have killed me. Trying to ensure that the right amount of time was used for each thing yet not having too much or ending up with empty spaces plus just making sure everything was in made scheduling less than fun.

  4. Even though this was technically a "pretend" summer camp planning project, there were many realistic components. I found that the easiest part of the project was creating a theme for the summer camp. Contrary to what I originally thought, it became fairly easy to then apply the theme to all of the other components of the summer camp notebook. On the other hand, the most challenging part to this project included the lack of knowing what all was "important enough" to go into the notebook. As an over achiever, I found it extremely difficult to narrow information down in order to make the notebook appear more attractive, as well as become more effective. I thought that there was always more content that could have been added to make the project plan more complete, fun, spiritual, and transformational. However, I learned that enough is just enough. One of my tasks included finding a speaker and that was also my favorite part of this project. I have a desire to speak for youth retreat events such as the pretend one we were planning for, and therefore, I was excited to get to explore what other youth ministry speakers are out there. My least favorite task of this project was creating the budget. I know that a budget is necessary for any ministry, but it was headache to put together. Even after our presentations, I am not certain that the budget was completed in a successful way, but with it being my first time ever organizing something in this manner, I think it was sufficient. Nonetheless, it was difficult but a great learning opportunity.

  7. I think the easiest part was picking a camp and a theme. The hardest part was computing the cost that included everything we wanted and needed. I really enjoyed working with my group on this, and each of them brought new ideas to the table on how things should be run. Their perspectives were much appreciated. I also really enjoyed looking for possible themes and making it into our own with the mud Monday fitting with the theme perfectly. It was an interesting experience and I am sure I will plan many more camps and retreats throughout my career.

  8. The easiest part for me was probably picking the themes and then creating the forms for it. The hardest part was definitely the budget. For one, I'm not good with numbers, so I couldn't really help in that aspect and the rest of my group was all flustered because our budget wasn't working out for a while. However, I actually really enjoyed putting it together because it showed me what all it takes to make something like this happen. Also, it was really fun to do research on all of the different aspects and choose which one you liked best.

  9. The easiest part of this project for me was probably planning the schedule itself. I have a lot of experience in this area and logical time thinking like that works well in my brain. The hardest part for me was probably what was easiest for everyone else, I am not a super creative person so coming up with a theme was not something i enjoyed or really had much input on (luckily my group is super awesome and creative). I think my favorite part was doing the budget, not because it was easy or all that enjoyable, but because it was something i had never experienced before and it was awesome to get to learn and experience something new when it comes to camping ministry.
