What is the purpose of an Object Lesson?
I believe that an Object Lesson is important because it brings meaning to whatever you are trying to get across. In the book, page 30, it says " Object lessons take an ordinary item from everyday life and attaches meaning to it. Jesus used object lessons many times throughout his ministry to give us a better meaning that we can hold onto in our minds because it helps us to remember it when ever we come across the object that was taught about in the lesson.

I think another purpose of an object lesson is to get people to understand abstract concepts like love, faith, etc. by applying that concept to something tangible. I think sometimes people think that they have to be some kind of theologian to understand things about God, but object lessons make certain things about God more tangible to others. Object lessons can help people apply concepts to their everyday lives in a very real way.
ReplyDeleteAlong with what the others have said about object lessons, I think part of the reason they are so effective is because they are a visual. When we are trying to learn or teach something, the more senses we can engage, the better the chances that the students will grasp and remember the concepts. If we just tell them, they are using one sense--hearing. But if we not only tell them, but show them and let them touch something or smell something that helps them absorb more of what is being taught.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the purpose of an object lesson is to bring an ideal that may be complex for some to understand and put it into simpler terms. Object lessons take ordinary language and items that most can relate to so the listener can comprehend a lesson that they normally wouldn’t think about or grasp. It also helps you cater to a diverse group of students by appealing to those who are visual and tangible learners without neglecting others. Object Lessons help those who learn visually and tangibly by making them engage in what they’re learning through manipulating a visual picture or using other senses to understand a lesson.
ReplyDeleteI like what Christian said about the Object lesson taking things that people can relate to and putting into a way that the listener can comprehend in a way that they normally wouldn't think. I believe it is great when teaching to put a lesson in a new way of thinking for the students to help them be creative in their ways of learning.
DeleteWhen looking at the purpose of an object lesson, we see that it is a great way to relate bible passages to everyday life. We can take a miscellaneous item and relate it to make a point. We see Jesus do this in the gospels and our pastors do it now. It is a good way to relate and impact our students without doing an every day sermon.
ReplyDeleteObject lessons give a visual to what is being taught. Because not everyone learns in the same manner, this is a great way to teach. Where some students may learn better by hearing, others may be visual learners. Object lessons uses both speaking and an object which gives the students a visual picture of what they are talking about.
ReplyDeleteObject lessons are not only beneficial for the learners, but also for the one teaching. The person teaching the lesson can become more engaged with those that are receiving it. Instead of standing in front of the group droning on and on about facts, however important they may be, the teacher is able to express a bit more passion on the subject and really show what it means to them. When those receiving a message are able to see the enthusiasm in a leader or teacher, I feel they tend to be more open to whatever is being taught.
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent point. I think it's crucial for a teacher to be enthusiastic about what they are teaching. Not only that, but by creating an object lesson, the teacher then learns something to because they have to come up with and relate the object lesson to the students.
DeleteI think object lessons are a great way to teach. If you can compare something in your lesson to an everyday object, your audience has a better chance of remembering it. However, object lessons can also be a bit confusing. Not only do you as the teacher need to be able to make the connection between object and lesson, the students must also be able to easily connect the two. Making sure your object and lesson correspond in a clear way will make it more memorable.
ReplyDeleteI believe that object lessons can be a great way to teach. I think that it is especially helpful for children because it lets them see the thing that you are talking about. However I also believe this to be true about using ab object lessons to teens or even adults. When people are able to visible see what they are talking about then the message is able to stick more with them because as they look back on it they will remember the object that went along with the lesson.
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely agree, object lessons can be great, but you also have to keep in mind how abstract the connection is. You have to be able to easily relate the object you are utilizing to the lesson at hand. For instance you could use a full jug of water to represent a person with faith and an empty jug for someone who has no faith. You proceed to punch both jugs, trials, and the full jug is able to stand against it.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that object lessons are very important. I am a visual learner by far, and it helps me store things in my memory when i have a good example to remember things by. I bet the same could be said for many other people as well. Because of this, object lessons can be a very useful and practical technique to teach students.
ReplyDeleteI think that objective lessons are important they give people the opportunity to visualize what we are talking to them about in a helpful way. Not saying that none of the other styles of teaching are not just as important but this style is a good one as well and important to certain kinds of learners.
ReplyDeleteClearly Jesus provides a supreme example of using object lessons in teaching. Depending of His surroundings and audience, He could mold the object lesson to make it as significant as possible. This illustrates the flexibility of object lessons as tools in teaching. In my experience leading small groups, beginning with an object lesson can often provide an excellent segue to a scriptural truth. No matter the age group or size of the crowd, there are always teachable moments when object lessons are involved
ReplyDeleteI believe object lessons are useful for several reason, the first is that it grabs attention the average middle schooler can only stay captivated for about seven minutes before you lose them. this may sound like a long time but it really helps to keep them into the message and send home the point. I also agree with Ben that the second point is that when they look or think about whatever the object lesson was they will remember the story you told them.
ReplyDeleteObject lessons are used to make people think outside of their own personal box and examine complex ideas about their own life and the others around them. They are a way to teach that makes the learner able to visualize the concept in different abstract ways that they havent maybe even thought of before. Plussssss if Jesus used them, then they are probably pretty rad.
ReplyDeleteObject lessons are really important to connect a teacher or speaker with their audience. Jesus used parables all through out the New Testament to help explain a concept or a new idea in a way that the common person would understand such as using something as simple as common currency or even crops.
