Details Camps & Retreats

As a leader, how will being organized help make your camp or retreat successful? If you can tell a parent to include one thing with their child, what will it be and why?
As a Leader, you must have a TO-DO list in advance before you even plan for the camp or you can pretty much forget about the most important things. As a group leader you have so much to be responsible for, but you could make it easier if you are prepared. Example, you need to arrive early to check-in or prepare for events. This will relieve any pressures and ensure your group has an incredible camp experience.

I will ask a parent to include mosquito repellant (spray/lotion) with their child to protect to them. This will ensure that each child has one to prevent bug bits. This won't take care of the entire problem, but will help and relieve one of the work loads for the group leaders.

  1. Tyler Gentry-
You touched on this a little bit, but I think being organized as a leader is so important because it relieves so much stress. Even if you, personally, do not get stressed or overwhemed easily, someone working with you might be if you are not being very organized. You set the tone for the whole planning process by how organized, on time, and faithful you are about your planning.
As for the one thing to bring, it pretty much depends on what the retreat is and what you will be doing. However, one always important thing for every church-related trip would probably be a Bible.

  2. I would start out by working with the foundation of a camp or retreat that was successful in my past. I don't know how to really plan one from the ground up, but I know that I can start from where others have gone before. I think you're right on having a checklist of things that need done before way before camp starts so that you stay ahead of what needs to be done. Delegating those things could also help to make the retreat successful.

The one thing I would have the students for sure bring is an attitude of humility and openness. If we go into a retreat or camp with a closed off mindset, then there won't be much, if any, growth.

  3. being organized helps in the sense that, everyone will be on the same page as the main goal will be that no one will NOT be informed of something.it is a for sure stress reliever to all parties involved and like tyler said... you truly do set the tone and get off to a great start by being organized and informative.
as to what to bring for sure...
    again to agree with tyler...
    a BIBLE.
needless to say the BIBLE may the most important thing despite what sort of retreat or camp this may end up being.

  4. Organization is key in any event, especially when it comes to an event with children. If you are organized before the camp/retreat you should have all your bases covered for during the camp/retreat no matter what the issue is that may come up.

To say something different from the others I would say something the parents should make sure the kids bring would be a photo of them for the times the kids will get homesick.

Being organized will help the process to run more smoothly. If there are unexpected bumps in the plans you can simply roll over them if you are organized, but it may throw everything off if there was no initial organization for the event.

Well, the item would be different depending on the environment, but a Bible would be important and maybe a letter from their family they can read when they need encouragement.

  6. I'm a very organized person but I canbe flexable at the same time. I think these two characteristics are going to be vital iin any retreats or camps I plan. Organization keeps things going and kids entertained but flexibility allows for things to be kept on going longer or shorter depending on things that might come up without prior notice.

I think in addition to thier Bible the students should bring a notebook of some kind so that they are able to write down things that occur throughout the week/weekend. I always brought some form or paper with me. This doesnt mean they have to write it thier notebooks every day but every once in a while when something they want to remember happens, writing it down is very important so that they are able to look back and remember and be encouraged when back home.
